About Newbridge Guides
'Guides' is all about having fun whilst learning to be a more responsible person. Our meetings are usually noisy and boisterous, although we do have some quiet time.
We sometimes have guests come along and talk to the girls about various things.
We have had the ambulance service with an ambulance and motorbike. An electrician has shown them how to wire a plug correctly. A mechanic has talked to them about car engines.
We try to make sure that there is something for all the girls to enjoy.
Since 2006 our guides have done the following:
Supported the ISPCC's 'Breakfast Together' week by holding a breakfast at their meeting.
Taken part in the area heat of the guides national table quiz. One of our teams went through to the National final in Dublin on 2 occasions.
POWER DAY was held here in Newbridge and guides from across the country attended. There were sessions on 'The Guide Promise' 'Millennium Development Goals' and Dance. All the girls and their leaders had a great day.
We have taken trips Ice-skating to Smithfield, Liffey Valley and Citywest Hotel.
We have been to Causey Farm and celebrated Halloween on a few occasions.
Most years we go away for an indoor weekend.
We have taken part in competitions between regional units. The girls are given a choice of 4 countries to discover more about, including customs, food and famous people who come from their chosen country.
Newbridge Guides regularly take part in the St Patrick's Day Parade here in Newbridge, most years we have Ladybirds and Brownies joining us.
There are various Regional events, which give the girls more chances to meet with other Guides, Brownies and Ladybirds from across the Eastern Region.
We have taken the girls orienteering on the Curragh, and on occasion we have invited Newbridge Brownies to join us.
Our last meeting of the year usually involves a treat for the girls, we have been to the Millenium Maze, bowling at K-Bowl, visited Dublin Zoo by train with the Ladybirds and Brownies.
We have spent a day with Newbridge Scouts learning how to canoe on the river Liffey.
Most years there is a Regional Camp held during a weekend at Larch Hill in Rathfarnham. Usually held in late June/early July.
We have also had trips abroad including Eurodisney, Austria and Switzerland.
2011 is our Centenary year. In January we had a launch ceremony in the RDS. In February we went to Tallaght basketball arena to celebrate Thinking Day with girls from across the region. On 7th May thousands of girls descended on Semple Stadium in Thurles where they took part in workshops, had the use of a helter-skelter and carousel , attempted a world record, paraded their banners around the arena and enjoyed a performance by an Abba tribute band.
We camped at the Girl Guide International camp held in Ireland in 2007 at Fairyhouse, where the girls met other Guides from around the world, including USA, Canada, and Africa.
The next International camp in Ireland will be in 2012 at Lough Key, we are already looking forward to that.
